0% installments in the sales: check this before you split the payment

"0% interest" is everywhere in November, but it doesn't always mean you pay the cash price. The fees and fine print to check before you choose installments.

0% installments in the sales: check this before you split the payment

In November, almost every big purchase comes with an offer to split it: "0% interest", "pay over 12 months". Installments can be a smart way to buy something you need without emptying your account. But 0% interest doesn't always mean you pay the same as the cash price.

1. Look for the admin fee

Many installment plans with banks and buy-now-pay-later apps add a one-time admin or processing fee, often a percentage of the price. The interest is 0%, but the plan isn't free.

Example: a 12,000 EGP phone over 12 months at 0% interest, with a 5% admin fee. You pay 12,600 EGP, not 12,000.

2. Compare the installment price with the cash price

  • Sometimes the sale price or a promo code only applies when you pay in full.
  • Sometimes the same item is listed at a higher price when you choose installments.

Add up what you'll pay in total and compare it to the best cash price you can get.

3. Check which cards and plan lengths qualify

A 0% offer is usually tied to specific banks, card types and plan lengths, like 6 or 12 months only, often with a minimum order. Read the offer on the payment page before you check out, not after.

4. Know the cost of paying late

Late fees can turn a 0% plan expensive fast, and missed payments can hurt your credit record. Set up automatic payment if you can.

5. Count all your installments together

One plan at 900 EGP a month feels easy. Three plans from the same sale season are 2,700 EGP a month for a year. Add them up before you take another one.

When installments make sense

  • It's something you need and would buy anyway.
  • The total cost, fees included, is the same or close to the cash price.
  • The monthly amount fits your budget without stretching it.

If it's only affordable because it's split, it's probably not a deal.
