Buying a phone or laptop in the sales? 7 things to check first

A big discount on a phone or laptop means nothing if it's the wrong version, has no warranty, or needs customs fees to work in Egypt. Seven checks before you pay.

Buying a phone or laptop in the sales? 7 things to check first

Phones and laptops are where the biggest discounts show up in November, and also where mistakes cost the most. Before you jump on a deal, go through these seven checks.

1. Match the exact model and version

The same name can hide very different devices. Check the full model number, storage, RAM, processor and release year. A laptop with last year's chip or a phone with half the storage should be cheaper, and that's not a discount.

2. For phones: is it sold officially in Egypt?

Since 2025, imported phones in Egypt have to be registered and pay customs and tax fees, around 38.5% of the phone's value, before they keep working on local networks. In January 2026 the exemption for one phone brought by a traveler was cancelled too.

  • A cheap "international version" from an unknown seller can end up needing fees, or stop working with your SIM.
  • Prefer phones sold officially in Egypt, and ask the seller if you're not sure.
  • You can check a phone's status by its IMEI in the official Telephony app.

3. Read the warranty

Check how long it is and who honors it. A local agent warranty with service centers in Egypt is worth more than a seller's promise, or an international warranty you can't use here.

4. Check who's selling it

Items sold or fulfilled by Amazon, Noon or Jumia themselves are usually easier to return and get help with than third-party sellers. For expensive devices, this matters more than a small price difference.

5. Know the real price before the sale

Write down the price now, or set a price watch. During the sale, compare against your number, not the crossed-out price on the page.

6. For laptops: check the small things

  • Keyboard: English only, or Arabic and English?
  • Charger: is it included, and does it fit Egyptian sockets?
  • Windows: is a license included, or is it sold without an operating system?

7. Read the return policy

Electronics often have shorter return windows, and some can only be returned if they're defective or the box is still sealed. Read it before you order, not after.
