Bought it on sale and want to return it? Do this first

Sale orders are easy to regret, and returns are where the small details decide whether you get your money back. What to check before you buy, when it arrives, and when you send it back.

Bought it on sale and want to return it? Do this first

In sale season, it's easy to order something and change your mind when it arrives: wrong size, not what the photos showed, or you found it cheaper somewhere else. Returns are usually possible, but the details decide whether you get all your money back.

Before you buy

  • Check the return window on the product page. It isn't the same for every item, and it can be different for items sold by third-party sellers.
  • Check if the item can be returned at all. Underwear, opened beauty products, some electronics and personal care items often can't be returned unless they're defective.
  • Read the rules for sale items. Some stores change return conditions during big sales.

When it arrives

  • Film the unboxing for expensive items, from the sealed package to the device turning on. If something is missing or broken, that video is your best evidence.
  • Check the item against your order: model, color, size, accessories.
  • Don't throw away the box, tags, accessories or the invoice until you're sure you're keeping it.

When you return it

  • Request the return from your orders page in the app or website, not by calling the courier.
  • Choose the reason that's actually true. "Damaged" or "not as described" can be handled differently from "changed my mind".
  • Pack it with everything it came with, in its original packaging if possible.
  • Keep the return confirmation and the courier's receipt until the refund arrives.

How the refund comes back

  • Card payments usually go back to the same card, and the bank can take some days to show it.
  • Cash on delivery orders are often refunded to a wallet in the store, or by bank transfer. Check which options you have before you pay cash.
  • If you used a code, you get back what you actually paid. Returning part of an order can also cancel a code if the rest is below its minimum.

The easiest return is the one you don't need. Make a list before the sales, check the version and the size, and buy what you planned.
